A cooperation event of working group migration and inequality studies of University Duisburg-Essen, Network of Kurdish Academics – Kurd-Akad and with support of interdisciplinary centre for integration and migration research
We are pleased to report about our first cooperation event with a university. On 7 October, we hold a workshop with the mentioned institution of University Duisburg-Essen entitled “Persons with Kurdish migration background as thematic field of German migration research”.
Within the context of increasing forced migration and the specific situations and needs of migrant population with Kurdish background, we see a research gap in the systematic scientific analysis with these issues. This is a result of German scientific debate on migration and their results for society, pedagogy and politics that was dominated by research on origin group Turkey and especially the Muslim-Sunni group of persons; although the migrant population is much more heterogeneous – regarding language, ethnicity and religion. Especially the group of Kurds is comparatively significant unexplored.
Together with experts from humanities and social studies of numerous universities and research institutes, we talked about creating more awareness for individuals of Kurdish origin in migration sciences and development of cooperation and concrete research initiatives in this context.
Interesting impulses were given by the speeches “The Kurdish media system – beyond nation states”, “Kurdish youths in Germany between inclusion and exclusion” and “Contribution of Kurdish women movement to empowerment of Kurdish women in German diaspora”.
We would like to thank the excellent moderator, all speakers, participants, and our cooperation partners of University Duisburg-Essen.
