War & isolation: medical perspectives for peace
In times of increasing crises and wars, it is essential to develop perspectives for peace. Healthcare professionals, especially physicians, have a special role to play. After all, there can be no health without peace.
The Middle East is one of the main trouble spots. Kurdistan is at the centre of this. Peace and a political solution to the Kurdish question require dialogue between the Turkish state and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party and its leader Abdullah Öcalan. Mr Öcalan is being held in incommunicado detention on the prison island of İmralı; neither his family nor his lawyers have had access to the island for over three years.
With our panel discussion, we would like to evaluate the conditions on the prison island of İmralı in the context of health and show what mechanisms are needed to make health and thus peace a realistic prospect.
