Turkey Elections 2023
Parliamentary and presidential elections will be held in Turkey on 14 May. 100 years after the founding of the Republic, the country has a choice between totalitarianism and an exit strategy to a Democratic Republic.
The coalition of MHP and AKP under President Erdoğan, as it has shown with yesterday’s wave of arrests, will mobilise all mechanisms, especially war and chaos, to stay in power. In this context, reference should be made to the PKK’s unilateral ceasefire, which was declared due to the earthquake and extended until the elections.
The question is whether the opposition will succeed in preventing another election victory by Erdoğan.
The HDP, the second largest opposition party in parliament, and its alliance partners have clearly positioned themselves and renounced their own presidential candidate. In the parliamentary elections, due to the threat of a ban on the HDP, they are running under the logo of the Green Left party. With its programme, the alliance sets clear and necessary accents for a democratic and pluralistic Turkey. The high quota of women on their list – 41% in electable positions alone – shows that a strong Green Left party group is essential.
As Kurd-Akad, we call on all electors to vote Erdoğan out of office and at the same time strengthen the Green Left party.
