Prof. Dr. Korur-Fincancı

Turkey and the Prof. Dr. Korur-Fincancı case: human rights behind bars

On 26 October 2022, the chairperson of the Turkish Medical Association Prof. Dr. Şebnem Korur-Fincancı, renowned forensic physician and co-author of the Istanbul Protocol, was arrested on charges of “propaganda for a terrorist organisation”. She had called for an investigation into Turkey’s use of chemical weapons after seeing footage of Kurdish fighters whose symptoms could be associated with fatal poisoning by chemical substances. In the past, Prof. Korur-Fincancı, who received the 2016 Aachen Peace Prize with the Scientists for Peace, and the Turkish Medical Association have also been targets of the state. President Erdoğan is now threatening to close the Medical Association. The anti-terror laws are repeatedly used to intimidate human rights defenders and critical institutions.

On the occasion of International Human Rights Day, we would like to express our solidarity with Prof. Korur-Fincancı with an event and have a detailed look at the situation in Turkey with regard to human rights and international law.
